We're looking at buying one or more Fractionals. Ideally 1/8th or 1/4th. Could anyone tell me what the best useage selection system it? There are many differences, between fixed weeks, 2 weeks in High, and 2 in Low. Some even offer 'as much as you like' (subject to availability) ... whatever that means

What a sadly uninformed and one sided view. It's true that some developers are demanding over the odds for their fractions (which in its true form is NOT timeshare)and some a re-packaging timeshare as fractional. Rule of thumb, check that you are actually getting a piece of the real estate on an established reputable resort, do some digging about how it is all structured AND how easy resales are, AND get a valuation on a similar unfurnished property in the area.

If all of the fractional sales prices add up to more than 25-30% more then buyer beware. You do pay a premium on a fraction but remember you are getting a fully furnished and equipped property. I bought a quarter share in Portugal 2 years ago and couldn't be happier with my decision. One of my co-owners has just sold their quarter share for a profit so that debunks another falsehood! SO bear in mind the key points above and you'll be OK.

Fractional ownership is another way of saying "timeshare." Typically, buyers pay far too much for a fraction of a shared property, and then over-pay for common costs. The only winners in FO/TS are the sellers. this is not investment, it's expensive and unwise.
If you want to buy a timeshare, the best way is to get a group together and buy a property betwen you, then raffle the best weeks each year among yourselves. It will cost you half the price, and the common costs will be a fraction of what they would be in a timeshare.
